Symptom Mapping Tools
The SPIDER Symptom Tool
The SPIDER tool was originally developed as a research-based way to better understand how symptoms show up across multiple body systems—especially for individuals with hypermobility and related conditions.
Because one of the biggest challenges in these conditions is this:
symptoms don’t stay in one system
and they don’t always look connected at first
People might experience:
pain
fatigue
digestive symptoms
dizziness or POTS
sensory or neurological differences
anxiety or mood changes
But they’re often looked at separately—when in reality, they’re interacting.
What makes this tool different
The SPIDER tool helps map symptoms across multiple domains and visually organizes them into a “web.”
That visual matters.
Because when everything is held in your head, it can feel:
random
inconsistent
hard to explain
But when it’s mapped out:
👉 patterns often start to emerge
The original tool was designed to help both individuals and healthcare providers better understand which symptoms are having the biggest impact—and to guide more targeted care.
Why families use it
Families often use this tool when:
symptoms don’t fully fit one diagnosis
different providers are focusing on different pieces
things feel inconsistent or unpredictable
they’re trying to advocate for care but don’t have a clear way to explain patterns
It gives you a way to:
see the full picture
organize what you’re already noticing
and communicate patterns more clearly
How this version is meant to be used
This version isn’t about scoring or getting a perfect result.
It’s about:
noticing,
mapping,
and making patterns more visible.
Because when patterns become visible,
next steps—whether medical, therapeutic, or environmental—often become clearer too.
Developed by and for
Developed by and for individuals and families—my own included—navigating complex, overlapping symptoms that don’t always fit into one clear explanation.
